Simultaneous Wastewater Treatment and Hydrogen Generation by the Plasma-Driven Solution Electrolysis Powered by the Hybrid Photovoltaic- Thermal Collectors

 

Treatment of wastewater, in particular industrial wastewater, from for example oil refineries, is a complex process. Techniques that include neutralization, coagulation, flocculation, flotation, sedimentation, filtration, clarification and biodegradation are used. Nevertheless, the by-products of such methods can be both volatile and toxic. Mostly they are an environmental problem, not a valuable resource. The WASTE4H2 project aims to change that. As part of the Polish-Oman scientific and research cooperation, scientists from the Research and Innovation Centre Pro-Akademia and the German University of Technology in Oman will develop a new technology for simultaneous treatment of wastewater in the refining industry and the production of hydrogen using plasma-driven solution electrolysis. The technology under development will enable not only effective treatment of wastewater after the extraction and processing of crude oil and post-production wastewater from refineries, but also the simultaneous production of hydrogen using solar energy and process waste heat.


As part of the project, RIC Pro-Akademia, as the leader of an international consortium, is responsible for designing and building a laboratory technology demo with auxiliary systems, creating an automatic cleaning system for hybrid photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) collectors, as well as modeling the influence of the changes in wastewater mixture content on the efficiency of the production process hydrogen and wastewater treatment. Thanks to the field research carried out by the project partner, the German University of Technology in Oman, it will be possible to study the components and basic subsystems of the technology in a near-real environment. The profitability of the technology and its implementation potential will also be analyzed.


The project is financed by the Polish National Center for Research and Development (NCBR) from the state budget of the Republic of Poland under the INNOGLOBO program. The aim of the program is to support Polish innovators in their expansion into foreign markets in the development, adaptation and implementation of modern technological solutions in a broad geographical context.
