Co-creating the future of environmental monitoring in the EU with new biosensors

11-06-2025

On May 26-27, 2025, the annual meeting of the AquaBioSens project took place in Crete, Greece, at the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH). Representatives from the sister project, MOBILES, also participated. The main goal was to present research findings and discuss progress on both projects.

Łukasz Gontar from RIC Pro-Akademia delivered a presentation on the environmental risk assessment associated with the use of GMO organisms for contamination monitoring.

Participants identified significant conclusions regarding synergies between the projects. Four key areas of potential collaboration were identified:
- Utilization of sample pre-concentration devices from AquaBioSens.
- Exchange of RNA extraction protocols.
- Integration of electrochemical biosensors developed in MOBILES.
- Agreement on joint reporting for biosensor application recommendations in public policies.

The meeting allowed us to both exchange experience and identify specific directions for further collaboration.

The next steps for the projects will focus on:
- Continuing the integration of the identified technologies, such as electrochemical biosensors.
- Developing a joint policy-recommendation report on biosensor implementation.
- Organizing further technical workshops to standardize laboratory protocols.
