Start date:2018-12-03
Completion date:2019-06-30
Project status:finished
Topic:Bioeconomy, Sustainable Energy, Circular and Low-Carbon Industry
Aim of the project:development and implementation of innovative solutions in the field of circular economy in the fish processing sector in Brazil

About the project

The aim of the project was to develop and implement innovative solutions in the field of circular economy in the fish processing sector in Brazil on the example of a small company PISCIS specializing in tilapia processing.

The following specific objectives were realized:

  1. preparation of a nearly 100% reduction of the fish waste from fish processing production;
  2. design of a new industrial process for converting the fish waste into energy which can be used by the company;
  3. developing new products or useful by-products, such as local biogas;
  4. development of the company thanks to increasing the competitiveness because of the reduction cost of energy and fees currently paid for waste utilization;
  5. creating additional, innovative for the company sources of income;
  6. input for the environmental protection and the CO2 reduction.

The project covered:

  1. laboratory tests, leading to the specification and characterization of the PISCIS company’s fish waste in scope of their potential for biogas production;
  2. specification of fish waste quantity and quality in order to prepare the assumptions for the technology for the biogas production;
  3. comparative analysis of the available technologies of biogas production, adequate for the needs and capabilities of PISCIS;
  4. social and environmental screening in scope of implementation of biogas production technology by PISCIS.

The project was implemented as part of the Low Carbon Business Action in Brazil program - Phase II (EuropeAid / 138337 / DH / SER / BR), co-financed by the European Union.
