Journal history

Acta Innovations is a relatively young journal, having been started in 2011 by the Research and Innovation Centre Pro-Akademia, a Polish research organisation which was established in 1996. In the beginning the journal was created as a space for disseminating peer-reviewed scientific information concerning  innovative sustainable technologies, especially in the field of low-carbon economy and renewable energy. From 2011 to 2019, the quarterly had one Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Ewa Kochanska; in 2020 this role was taken over by Dr. Rafal Lukasik (Portugal), who is collaborating with Prof. Igor Matyushenko (Ukraine), the Managing Editor.

There has been a substantial expansion in all aspects of the journal from 2011 to the present.

In 2011, one issue comprising 6 articles, authored by 6 individual authors, mainly from Poland and in Polish, was published. In 2019, there were 4 issues, comprising 27 articles, authored by 60 authors, coming not only from Poland, but also 5 other countries: Ukraine, Brazil, Austria, Nigeria, Latvia, Cyprus.

In 2011, there were 4 reviewers, mainly from Poland, while in 2019 there were 28 reviewers, coming from 13 countries, from 4 continents.

In 2011, with one exception, the Editorial Team was drawn entirely from Poland. At present the Team spreads over 2 continents and 6 countries, namely: France, Mexico, Poland, Greece, Portugal, Ukraine.

In 2011, the journal was not indexed in any widely recognized bibliographic database. In 2019, it has been indexed by 15 databases, including ERIH+, DOAJ, OAJI, CEEOL, CiteFactor.

Even though Acta Innovations is an international journal, Polish scientific community as the one being the closest to the Publisher, has been using Acta Innovations as a publishing channel most actively. Authors from Poland have been receiving scores under the national science evaluation system for publishing articles in Acta Innovations since 2013. This score has grown from 6 points, through 8 points up to 20 points as of 2019, which has demonstrated the growing recognition of the journal by the public research funding bodies in Poland.

2015 was an important year of changes in the journal’s publishing practices. Since July 2015 Acta Innovations has been issued exclusively in English, while since June 2015, the journal has been co-issued also by the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, one of the important international research partners of the Publisher. This step has opened new channels for further internationalization of the journal.

From the outset, all articles have been published through Open Access and with no article processing fees. This approach has made Acta Innovations a unique platform for publishing reviewed scientific papers. An important enabler for this publishing practice has been the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, which has provided the Publisher financial support for the journal since 2016 under three development grants.
